English is a very interesting language. It has borrowed words from many other languages. Immigrants(移民) coming into the United States have contributed many words to the language, which have kept their original pronunciation. “Coolie” and “kowtow” we re taken from the Chinese language, “kamikaze from the Japanese, “shampoo” from India, “blitz” from German, “amigo” and “Los Angeles” from Spanish and so on.

Many students have studied English for years, some as many as eight. However, some students still have difficulty in speaking fluent English. Some know many words but are unable to them when native speakers use them. In our Oral English classes we will focus on speaking and listening to native English speakers. For this reason, because we are trying to train your ears to hear English and your mouths to speak intelligible (易理解的) English, we will have a rule that ONLY ENGLISH will be spoken in our English classes. Anyone speaking Chinese in class will be required to pay a fine in order to encourage the speaking and understanding of English. If teachers enter a classroom and discover that anyone is speaking Chinese, they will require everyone in the room to pay the fine. It is everyone’s job to enforce the English-Only rule. It is for your benefit. It is because we want to accustom (使习惯于) your ears to hearing English.

Other subjects may be learned solely from books but the only way to learn a foreign language is to SPEAK IT! Students are often nervous about speaking in class at first but we hope to make the classes fun, so you will forget your nervousness and learn to speak out. Enjoy your classes. 56. World Car Free Day is a very important day on the environmental calendar. Every September

22, governments, green groups and ordinary citizens stress the damage cars are doing to the earth. The day is a reminder that we do not need to rely so much on cars. Those who take part in the activity hope that we all should realize we do not have to accept our car-controlled society. Ca rlos Pardo from Colombia’s Sustainable Urban Transport Project said, “World Car Free Day is not only a celebration of fun ways to get around the city, but a demonstration of traffic-free streets and clean air is possible. But we do not want just one day of celebration and then a return to normal life. When people get out of their cars, they should stay out of their cars. It is up to us, our cities and our governments to help create lasting change to benefit walkers, cyclists and other people who do not drive cars. ” Car-free days were organized as early as during the 1970s, and several car-free days were organized in European cities during the early 1990s. An international car-free day was organized in Europe in 1999. The European Union adopted the idea in 2000. Today, as many as 100 million people in over 1500 cities worldwide celebrate this day.

World Car Free Day aims to take a large number of cars off the streets for all or part of a day. This will give people a chance to see what their town might look like with fewer cars. But some people say it is a one-day trick and does not make people give up their cars for the rest of the year. They say what is needed is a move towards a more sustainable city transportation system. 60. September 22 is a day ______.

A. when cars cause no damage to the earth B. when we can go on separate holidays C. that reminds us to drive our cars less D. that tells us to refuse to drive any cars 61. According to Carlos Pardo, _______.

A. it is impossible to have traffic-free streets B. people should keep away from their cars C. it’s funny to get around the city without cars D. each day should be like World Car Free Day 62. What can be inferred from the passage? A. No cars can be seen on World Car Free Day B. Further action is needed to make people drive less C. Car-free days first appeared about 50 years ago. D. Most people in the world are celebrating the day 三、任务阅读

We live in a time when the day is controlled by selfishness and greed. The battle of selfishness and greed has been increasingly fierce and there have been many casualties, but desire has tired too many people and we find that the populated areas of the twenty-first century have lost hope for the boring symphony of selfishness. Now I have several suggestions that will get you back on your feet, so that you can continue walking down the road of life with your head held high, arm in arm with your fellow man as equal.

Money isn’t everything. There exists a common understanding that everything around us is measured by money and an assumption that the meaning of life is to make as much of it as

humanly possible, so that you can live a comfortable and luxurious life. It is clear that money is indeed necessary to get through life, whether spent on food or shelter, but the air we breathe and the love we share are both free and extremely rewarding. Too many people die alone, only to be remembered for their full bank accounts or their shocking debts, so we must be remembered for our kindness to others and contributions to society.

Share with others. A miser is a person who cares extremely about their wealth and takes from everyone everything, with only one thing in their mind that they demand more. Not only are misers hated by the people surrounding them, but they are also the death of many men. Some of us will never admit that they take far more than they give. We are supposed to give a little, even if we receive nothing in return. Show generosity to your friends, co-workers, family, neighbors and you will be on your way to removing the greed from your life.

Act unselfishly. We must learn to act unselfishly for people and help whoever in need, not because doing so makes us feel superior, not to expect something in return either, but because it helps them survive, which makes them feel connected with the world, with a smile on their face and a strong need to give to others. By acting unselfishly, we will teach others how to act unselfishly too. Next time you stick your neck out for a selfish miser, be optimistic and think that
